The object

Two vessels, one inside the other. The outer dome shelters a smaller interior form, a cone in some pieces, a sphere in others, and each keeps its oil low at the base, like a secret kept at the bottom of a voice. Black reeds pass up through the inner neck and stand above the whole composition, thin dark lines against soft volume. It is a sculptural diffuser in the strict sense: remove the function entirely and it would still earn its place on the shelf. That the ceramic also carries scent feels almost like generosity.

The ritual

Pour slowly. The oil finds the base of the inner form and rests there, out of sight, which is where this piece keeps all its machinery. Set the reeds through the inner neck and let them stand. From here the work is theirs: drawing the oil upward, handing it to the air, unhurried and unplugged. Turn the reeds when the scent recedes. A ceramic reed diffuser has no moving parts except the ones you move, and that gesture, now and then, is the whole of it.

We keep beautiful containers because some part of us believes the interior life deserves architecture too.

Where it lives

It takes the sightline positions. The mantel, if you have one. The console you face from the sofa. The open shelf that greets the hallway, where its dome reads as still life before it reads as scent. Give it a little space on either side; objects this composed prefer not to queue. Rooms settle around it.

Why can't I smell my reed diffuser anymore?

Usually your nose has simply adapted. We stop noticing a constant scent within minutes, even while guests smell it clearly. Flip the reeds, leave the room for an hour, then return. If the scent is still faint, the reeds may be saturated with dust or old oil and due for replacement.

Can you refill a reed diffuser?

Yes. A well made diffuser vessel is designed to outlive its first oil. Clean the vessel, add fresh diffuser oil and replace the reeds, since used reeds clog and carry the previous scent. Refilling keeps a sculptural piece in use for years rather than months, which is the point of buying one.

What are diffuser reeds made of?

Traditional reeds are cut from rattan, whose fine natural channels draw oil upward like a wick. Fibre reeds are a newer alternative made from porous polymer, with a more consistent throw. Thicker reeds move oil faster and give a stronger scent. Black reeds are simply dyed, chosen when the diffuser is meant to be seen.

Where should you display a sculptural diffuser?

Give it a surface where it can be seen at rest, an entry console, an open shelf or a low table, with gentle air movement to carry the scent. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades oil and warms the vessel. One considered object in clear space reads better than several crowded together.
